The Publishing Academy is a month-and-a-half long series designed to help students navigate the complex landscape of academic publishing. The graduate student cohort will participate in active online sessions led by campus faculty and librarians who will support students in making good judgments about the venues they publish in. Students will learn about negotiating the peer review process effectively, understanding student rights as an author, and how to succeed in making the transition from research to publication. The academy also features interdisciplinary panels, where tenured and early-career faculty share their publishing expertise and provide valuable guidance to new authors. The Publishing Academy is a collaborative initiative of the Graduate School and University Libraries.
Typical topics include citation impact metrics; copyright and licensing; traditional vs. open access publishing; writing for publication, selecting publishing venues; working through the peer-review process; issues in publishing.
In this academy, participants will complete a publishing planning workbook, gain valuable knowledge, skills, and experience with the best practices in publishing; gain practical strategies, tools, resources to help you immediately; receive a certificate acknowledging participation and a milestone item for transcripts; bolster CV or resume for the job search.
