Mentoring Academy

Graduate Student Mentoring Academy

Spring-Summer 2025 Dates and Times: TBD

Applications Available: Late October

Application Deadline: TBD

The Mentoring Academy is a series of six sessions designed to provide a foundation of best practice guidelines for mentoring, an opportunity to learn from faculty mentors and peers, and an environment to solve challenges with mentees. Graduate students will be empowered with the confidence and tools to become effective mentors for students of all levels, preparing them to mentor others now and in the future. Faculty mentors serve as panelists and case study guides for each session. Session content is drawn from the NSF Entering Mentoring Series, the NIH Resilient Scientist Series, and UofL student feedback.

Typical Topics: Setting goals and aligning expectations, communication, emotional intelligence in mentoring, addressing equity and inclusion, self-awareness and assertiveness, professional development, mentoring networks, addressing understanding, and fostering independence.

In this academy, participants will produce a draft mentoring compact, gain valuable knowledge, skills, and experience with the best practices in mentoring; gain practical strategies, tools, resources to help you immediately; and bolster CV or resume for the job search.
