GTA Academy Part 1: Introduction to Teaching in Higher Education

The GTA Academy Part I: Introduction to Teaching in Higher Education, is a semester-long series of nine sessions each fall designed to introduce graduate students to college teaching. Each cohort of students participates in an integrated, cohesive set of sessions along with faculty mentors selected for their expertise in teaching. Content is targeted toward beginning learners and those wishing to frame their understanding of teaching to a higher education environment.

Typical topics include creating a positive classroom community, active learning, developing your teaching philosophy statement, assessing student learning, and more. 

In this academy, participants will produce a draft teaching philosophy statement, gain valuable knowledge, skills, and experience with the scholarship of teaching and learning in higher education; gain practical strategies, tools, resources to help participants immediately; and bolster their CV or resume for the job search.


GTA Academy Part 2: Advanced Concepts and Strategies in Post-Secondary Teaching

Spring 2025 Dates and Times: Thursdays, 2pm-4pm (2/6, 2/20, 2/27, 3/6, 3/20, 3/27)

Apply Here - Please note that only students who have completed the GTA Academy Part 1, taken a teaching course as a part of a graduate program, or have an education degree and have taught in K-12 may apply to participate in this academy.

The GTA Academy Part II: Advanced Concepts and Strategies in Post-Secondary Teaching, is a semester-long series of sessions designed to build on existing understanding, experience and skills in teaching and learning at the post-secondary level.  Graduate students who have completed a prior GTA Academy, as well as those who have completed a course in college teaching or have a degree in teaching, are invited to apply to this more in-depth series of sessions designed to provide graduate students an opportunity to learn about college teaching in a deeper and more interactive way. 

Typical topics for this academy are driven by current interest. 

In this academy, participants will produce a teaching portfolio including a course design document, a teaching philosophy statement, an expert teaching observation, a co-teaching experience, and a summary reflection; and bolster their CV or resume for the job search.
