International Student Spotlight: Juliana Binhote
January 16, 2025International graduate student Juliana Binhote brings a unique blend of professional experience and an insatiable curiosity to her studies at UofL. As a former lawyer in Brazil, Juliana was inspired by her experiences with her father’s firm to understand the complexities of family business dynamics. Her journey from practicing law to pursuing a PhD in Entrepreneurship at the College of Business has been fueled by a deep passion for teaching, research, and uncovering how organizational culture shapes success.
Now immersed in her doctoral studies, Juliana’s research focuses on the delicate interplay between work-life balance and the performance of entrepreneurs and family firms. “I chose to pursue a PhD in Entrepreneurship at the College of Business because of its exceptional entrepreneurship and family business scholars,” she says. “The support I received here made me even more aware of the importance of community and belonging.”
In addition to her academic pursuits, Juliana’s transition to life as an international student has been equally transformative, offering new challenges and opportunities for growth. “Although I had visited the United States before as a tourist, living here has been a completely different experience. I tried my best to learn about the culture and understand how the university system works.”
Participating in the Graduate School’s PLAN events and GTA Academy, utilizing the writing center at the library, serving as a representative on the graduate council and engaging in College of Business events have helped Juliana integrate and grow within the university community.
My advice for others is to seek out your people. You don’t have to and shouldn’t go through your international experience alone.
“There are people who will support you through the highs and lows of the PhD journey, with all its emotional ups and downs. I am grateful to have found such a group within my cohort and the College of Business. They made me feel seen, heard, and cared for.”
The academic path at UofL has allowed Juliana to translate her research into practical insights for entrepreneurs through teaching. After graduating this year, she will begin her journey as a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Entrepreneurship. “Joining a team of fantastic scholars and staff who share my personal and professional values in research and teaching is a dream come true.”
As a graduate teaching assistant, Juliana has become an advocate for her students; her support often extending beyond the classroom to discuss projects and be a resource for future success. During her time as an instructor Juliana has been recognized as a Student Champion, a finalist for the Graduate School’s Excellence in Teaching Award and a 2023-2024 Faculty Favorite.
My greatest reward is witnessing my students thrive.
