While many students rely on institutional funding for their research, others seek out funding provided external to the university. Not only can this funding pay for graduate education, but securing external funding often also provides students with additional professional development, a foundation of grant awarding that can lead to future funding, and skills useful for any career path.
External funding does require graduate students to put in extra effort, though the benefits of securing an external grant almost always outweigh the difficulties.
The Office of Research and Innovation has excellent educational resources to help graduate students learn more about the external grant funding process, as well as resources to search for grant funding. The links and databases provided are searchable by topic, discipline, target population, category of funder and other key variables.
