Jacob Owsley is the 2024 Graduate Student Excellence in Teaching Award recipient. 

 assistants (GTAs) who have distinguished themselves by the care they have given and the excellence they have shown in meeting their instructional responsibilities. The purpose of this university-wide award is to recognize the best of our graduate teaching assistants and to highlight the significant contribution they make to undergraduate education (or in some cases, graduate instruction) at the University of Louisville.  

Nomination Process 

Nominees must first be selected at the academic unit level. All academic units may nominate at least one student but no more than 10% of their total GTAs. Units may nominate a maximum 4 GTAs per cycle. Unit representatives then nominate students to the Graduate School. Learn more about the Graduate School nomination process. 

Selection Criteria 

  • Any graduate assistant (GA) who has instructional duties assigned as part of their graduate contract is eligible to be nominated. Students must have taught for at least two semesters to receive an award 
  • Excellence in meeting the responsibilities of their teaching assistantship 
  • Ability to encourage critical thinking as well as disciplinary understanding  
  • Use of inclusive teaching methods to meet students where they are 
  • Excellent organizational skills, course management and creativity and enthusiasm for teaching 
  • Willingness to solicit and reflect upon feedback about teaching and to develop and implement improvement plans 

Award 

One award of $500 will be given to the Graduate School winner. All nominees shall receive an honorable mention certificate, with at least one nominee from each unit also receiving a book focused on college teaching. Awards will be given each spring semester during the Graduate Dean’s Reception.
