The Director of Graduate Studies (DGS) at the University of Louisville serves as the administrative coordinator for a graduate program. Together with the program faculty, the DGS is involved in admissions decisions, ensures students adhere to program and graduate school polices for graduate education, and monitors progress of students in the program, and serves as an advocate for students in the program. The DGS is typically a faculty member in the graduate program and a member of the graduate faculty. This page provides information for new DGS’ regarding DGS orientation and for current and new DGS’ for workshops set up by the Graduate School. An academic department should notify the Graduate School when a new DGS has been selected.

DGS Orientation and Training

DGS Orientation is held each fall, typically in September. While the session is most useful for new DGSs, returning DGSs and support staff are welcome to participate. Graduate School staff will reach out to all DGSs in the summer or early fall to invite them to participate. The Graduate School also holds a series of professional development workshops each year to support DGSs in their role.

DGS Meetings

DGS meetings are held each semester on both the Belknap and HSC campuses to keep Directors of Graduate Studies informed about updates to program policies and procedures and other important changes. These meetings provide a vital platform for discussing new developments and ensuring consistent communication across units and departments.
