Community Engaged Scholarship Academy: Part 1
Fall 2025 Dates and Times: Wednesdays from 2:30-4:30 p.m. (9/24, 10/8, 10/22, 10/29, 11/5, 11/12, 12/3) as well as a one day special training on Friday, September 26 from 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. (students may miss sections of the day for required academic reasons).
The Community Engaged Scholarship Academy: Part 1 is a semester-long series of sessions introducing graduate students to key concepts in, methods of, and considerations for community engaged scholarship, as well as how to apply this knowledge in research and practice. The Community Engaged Scholarship Academy is a collaborative program among the Graduate School, and faculty and staff throughout campus.
Typical Topics: Introduction to community engaged scholarship, ethics in community engagement projects, developing and sustaining community partnerships, methods of community engaged research, documenting and communicating accomplishments, and trauma-informed practice.
In this academy, participants will learn foundational concepts and key approaches to community engagement and community-engaged scholarship; gain practical strategies, tools, resources to help participants immediately; bolster their CV or resume for the job search; and (potentially) prepare a proposal to participate in a community engaged research project for the Community Engaged Scholarship Part 2.
Community Engaged Scholarship Academy: Part 2
Spring 2026 Dates and Times will be available in November. Only students who have completed Part 1 or who have had education or training in community engaged scholarship may participate in Part 2.
Part 2 of the Community Engaged Scholarship Academy will allow students the ability to put into practice what they have learned about community engaged scholarship.
Outcomes: Participating graduate students who are able to mostly complete the requirements will be eligible for a $500 award.
2024-2025 Community Engaged Scholarship Academy
In partnership with the J. Graham Brown Foundation, the 2024-2025 Community Engaged Scholarship Academy supported the collaboration between UofL graduate students and several community organizations, including the Louisville Zoo, Kentucky Youth Advocates, Tip It Forward, SOS International, Louisville Grows, C.H.O.I.C.E, Bernheim Forest and Arboretum, the Louisville Free Public Library.
