Application Requirements

Applicants for a degree program must submit an official transcript from each college attended. Transcripts will only be considered official if they are sent directly from the issuing institution. Many institutions use third-party transcript systems, which allow for electronic transmission of the transcripts. These requests can be processed through your previous institution’s registrar’s office.

All University of Louisville transcripts will automatically be linked to a student’s application once it has been submitted and the application fee has been made. 

The addition of UofL transcripts to an application can take up to 3 business days to complete. If they have not been added to your application after this time, please notify gradschool@louisville.edu.

Applications to non-degree or certificate programs need only submit an official transcript certifying at least a conferred bachelor's degree.  

GRE/GMAT 

While most master’s level programs have removed the requirement for the GRE/GMAT exam(s) for admission, programs will often utilize scores from these exams when determining program-based scholarships or funding. Applicants applying as non-degree or visiting students are not required to submit test scores.  

English Proficiency 

All applicants for whom English is not a native language must submit official test scores reflecting English proficiency. 

Test score requirements vary, so it is important to confirm your program’s requirements prior to taking any exams.  

Your official test scores can be reported to our institution by using the institution code 1838 when placing an order for official scores through the testing service’s site.

As a general requirement for graduate applications, a personal statement is a short essay of around 500–1,000 words, in which you tell a compelling story about who you are, what drives you and why you’re applying. Please confirm with your academic program if there are specific requirements for your personal statement.  

Most applicants will be asked to submit a resume for their application. Your resume should provide a concise overview of your qualifications and achievements, specifically tailored for admission into graduate programs. 

Two letters of recommendation from people familiar with the applicant's academic work are required. Some programs require more than two letters of recommendation.

All visiting students must submit a visiting student letter. The letter should verify that the student is in good standing in a graduate program, indicate the specific term for which the student has permission to enroll, list the approved courses to be taken, and be signed by the registrar or dean of the student's home school. An application, application fee, and visiting student letter are the only credentials required of visiting students.
