Academic Grievance Procedure
The grievance procedure aims to offer an equitable mechanism for addressing student complaints concerning a particular action or decision taken by the faculty or a faculty member in regard to the student’s academic performance and progress, such as coursework, grading, evaluations, teaching and research responsibilities, examinations, dissertation, etc.
If the grievance cannot be satisfactorily resolved with the faculty member, their supervisor, or Student Grievance Officer, the matter is then sent to the Unit Academic Grievance Committee. The committee will hold a hearing and make a recommendation to the Unit Dean. Once the Unit Dean makes their decision, any party involved in the grievance has the right to file an appeal.
The appeal will be given to the University Student Grievance Committee housed within the Graduate School. This committee consists of four (4) faculty members and three (3) students from the Student Government Association. Each Unit has a faculty representative and an Alternate who may be chosen as one of the committee members.
An outline of the steps can be found in the Graduate Academic Catalog Graduate Student Academic Grievance Procedure. A full breakdown of the procedure can be found in the Redbook Redbook Chapter Six — Student Complaint and Grievance Procedure
