Orientation Information
Register now for graduate orientation!
Welcome to graduate study at the University of Louisville! Whether you are a full or part-time student, relocating or local, pursuing a master’s or doctoral degree, graduate orientation is designed to assist in your transition to graduate study at the University of Louisville. All new graduate students are invited and highly encouraged to attend orientation. New graduate teaching assistants (GTAs) are required to attend the general session and the GTA-specific session. If your department is offering formal training for GTAs, they must notify us in writing at gradadm@louisville.edu that you will be excused from our orientation. Failure for GTAs to attend orientation without departmental support and School of Interdisciplinary and Graduate Studies (SIGS) approval may result in stipend delays.
Graduate orientation is meant to complement departmental orientations by providing information on University policies and programs, and by allowing an opportunity for you to connect with other graduate students (new and current) and University administrators.
Graduate orientation will include a student resource fair and sessions to discuss programs, policies, and academic transition issues. In addition, there will be a session restricted to new GTAs. While at orientation, you will be able to have your Cardinal Card made, learn about campus organizations and resources, and take a campus tour.
If you previously attended UofL, you do not need to get a new Cardinal Card unless you are beginning a program on the Health Science Campus (HSC). For Cardinal Card Office hours and to find out the benefits associated with your card, please contact the Cardinal Card Office. If you are registered for classes, we encourage you to obtain your Cardinal Card prior to orientation due to the large number of students expected to attend. Students have the option of providing the Cardinal Card office with a photo online prior to orientation. For more information, please visit http://louisville.edu/cardinalcard/photo-sub and choose the orientation session "Graduate Student" to use this option.

HUMAN RESOURCES
The School of Interdisciplinary and Graduate Studies has partnered
with the Human Resources Department (HR) to create a centralized payroll
orientation program for incoming graduate students who will receive a
stipend through a graduate assistantship or fellowship. HR has created a
web site to provide information about the new orientation process. The
web site instructs students to complete an electronic I-9 and new
graduate student hire packet prior to attending an orientation session.
The site also provides a link for students to register for one of
the seven orientation sessions that HR will hold. The link to this site
is:

INTERNATIONAL GRADUATE TEACHING ASSISTANTS
The University of Louisville requires all new international graduate teaching assistants, with the exception of those teaching a foreign language, to demonstrate their level of proficiency in the English language before they may begin their teaching assignments. The English proficiency evaluation consists of a 20 minute teaching demonstration, during which the GTA will present a topic that would be typical of a teaching assignment for a class which he/she is to teach. You must schedule your teaching demonstration by making an appointment with the IESL office. Please contact Nancy Henry at iesl@louisville.edu or at 502-852-5901.
