Graduate Teaching Assistant Application

As educators, what are the technology tools that allow us to more effectively communicate with our students to enhance their learning? How do we navigate this evolving digital landscape? Join your colleagues from across the university as we explore these questions and share best practices in using technology in the college classroom to positively impact student learning.

Technology innovator Dr. Cynthia Selfe, author of Literacy and Technology in the 21st Century: the Perils of Not Paying Attention, will be this year’s keynote speaker. Dr. Selfe is a Humanities Distinguished Professor in the Department of English at The Ohio State University. Her keynote session, Communicating in the Digital Age: Using Words, Images, and Sound, will provide insights for how faculty can help students communicate effectively in digital environments that cross conventional geopolitical, linguistic, and cultural boundaries.

Participants can also join Dr. Selfe for an engaging workshop before the Celebration Event. Her workshop, “Using Autobiographical Narratives to Improve the Teaching of [Insert Your Subject Here]” will take place Thursday afternoon.  On Friday, participants will choose from 15 UofL faculty-led concurrent sessions that share best practices and practical applications for using instructional technology in the college classroom. Additionally, we invite you to join us for a special lunch program as we recognize the 2010-11 Top 11 Faculty Favorite Award recipients. And, don’t miss your opportunity to interact and share teaching strategies with the winners during the Top 11 Faculty Favorite panel session.

You will also have the opportunity to visit our Technology Café to gain hands-on experience using a variety of top instructional technologies.

All Graduate Teaching Assistants may apply to participate in either the Thursday Celebration Workshop and/or the Friday Full-Day Celebration.  In addition to completing the application form and one-page essay, students are required to have their graduate program director or chair send an e-mail to the Program Manager of the School of Interdisciplinary and Graduate Studies, Dr. Michelle Rodems (Michelle Rodems), indicating approval of the student’s participation in the Celebration.

Participation in the Celebration of Teaching and Learning will be limited and competitive, with priority given to both disciplinary diversity of participants and to the overall quality and thoughtfulness of the application essay. Fifteen GTAs will be invited to attend the Thursday workshop with Dr. Selfe and fifty GTAs will be invited to participate in the Full-Day Celebration on Friday. GTAs who are accepted will be notified by Monday, February 3, and must confirm attendance by Friday, February 8.

We expect a large number of applications, and therefore we will create a waiting list for those applicants who are not selected to attend. Any GTA who does not confirm attendance will be removed from the accepted list and replaced with a GTA on the waiting list. We hope to provide Celebration slots to those GTAs who demonstrate a commitment to attendance and engagement in the topic.
