About the GTA Academy

The Graduate Teaching Assistant Academy, established at UofL during 2008-2009, is a year-long series of sessions designed to knowledge, skills, and excellence in college teaching. Each cohort of students participates in interactive workshops along with faculty mentors selected for their expertise in teaching. Content includes conceptual frameworks for understanding today's students, practical teaching strategies, and the scholarship of teaching and learning. As a part of the GTA Academy, graduate students participate in a micro-teaching session to both observe and gain feedback from peers on their teaching and complete a teaching philosophy statement -- both of which are valuable in the job search process. The GTA Academy is a collaborative program between the School of Interdisciplinary Studies and the Delphi Center for Teaching and Learning.


2014-2015 GTA Academy information

To accommodate as many students as possible, we rotate the day of the week on which the GTA Academy is held each year. 

This year, the academy will meet about once a month, on Tuesdays, from 4:30 - 6:30 PM, five times during the fall semester and four times in spring semester.  Dinner will be served.

Applying for the GTA Academy

All graduate students are encouraged to apply, though graduate students who currently have, have had, or will have a teaching assistantship will receive priority.  In addition to completing the application form, students are required to have their graduate program director or chair send an e-mail to the Dean of the School of Interdisciplinary and Graduate Studies, Dr. Beth Boehm (, indicating approval of the student’s participation in the academy.

Participation in the Graduate Teaching Academy will be limited and competitive, with priority given to a disciplinary diversity of participants.  GTAs who are accepted into the academy and attend at least 7 of 9 sessions will receive a Graduate Teaching Academy certificate and be able to apply for travel funds for professional development.
